2013 Overnight Route Information

The Washington, DC Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk is a 16-mile journey through the iconic neighborhoods of the capital. The route will start and end at George Washington University and will be a tour of several Washington landmarks, including:

This one-of-a-kind tour will show you the very best of our capital city with an experience that few have had the chance to enjoy - seeing all of the capital buildings and historic monuments illuminated against the backdrop of the evening sky.

The route itself will be very clearly marked with directional signage and other markings. These signs will guide your walking tour of Washington, DC, and ensure that you will not miss one sight along this incredible journey.

We value your safety and have plenty of support in place to ensure that you are well taken care of. Quick Stops and Rest Stops are located every 2-3 miles along the route. Quick Stops provide access to portable restrooms and water/sports drink refills. Rest Stops include everything at a Quick Stop as well as snacks and a medical team.

We also want to make sure you are walking the correct amount of mileage for you. Although our 16-mile route will offer a unique view of Washington, DC the Overnight Experience is much more than the miles walked.

Participants remember the conversations they have before the Overnight, during the ceremonies, and throughout the walk much more than they remember the mile markers. To guarantee that everyone is walking the right distance for them we have a dedicated "Sweep Team" on our Crew that are available to our walkers. These Crew members will patrol the route in vans and can transport walkers to the next Rest Stop (and reduce the route mileage in the process).
